Liz Black
Artist Statement
I gather organic form through memory and drawing as I walk daily in nature. My work happens in space as I enter an ephemeral world of making and materials.
As I observe my universe, I am attracted to organic patterns including galaxies, clusters, weather patterns, coral reefs, forests, rocks, and the human body. I am interested in organic entanglement and metamorphosis. My work becomes an organism that travels and morphs into other creatures.
Concepts in my work are: playful movement and rhythm, the gestural, how forms connect and converse with each other, and organic materials vs. synthetic. I am interested in the ability of imagery, visual stimulation, to alter human consciousness and how humans connect with and observe nature, as a part of themselves or not.
About The Artist
After receiving her BFA in Painting, Drawing, & Printmaking from Utah State University in 2008, Liz Black has continued to explore new mediums, installation and sculpture.
Liz started making her creations as a young child making books and paper dolls. Growing up in the mountains of Utah, Liz had many opportunities to travel to lakes and forests where she collected unique rocks and leaves, according to her personal aesthetic. These experiences of being a part of nature as a child inspires her organic work.
